The basic idea of SWEAT SHOP is to extrapolate the mutuality of art and money, while commenting on the means of capitalist production in a globalized world, and reflecting on the artistic traditions in the means and ends of production in the eastern and the western philosophy.
For two days during the Gallery Weekend in Berlin, a group of 16 contemporary artists of different stylistic backgrounds and origins will work in in Berlin-Kreuzberg's free art space SCHAU FENSTER under “sweat shop conditions”. During their five hour shift, all an artist is given is a chair, a table, and their chosen working equipment. Each one of them inhabiting the space of round about 4 x 4 meters.

The abstract work of the Berlin artist Marc von der Hocht is based on the vocabulary of architecture, design and fashion. Within his paintings, collages and objects he combines fragments of this range to technical scenarios by taking details out of their context and arranging them to unknown units. Towards Albert Einsteins term of spacetime, there is no experience of space without the impact of time, a fact that is present through the artists works. Time shapes and changes the perception of space as von der Hocht recognized himself while travelling or riding his Cannondale bike quite fast through the streets of Berlin as soon on his way to Sweatshop.

The work of Thomas Draschan is based on all kinds of found materials.
His films based on analog archival material paved the way to worldwide exhibitions from Jason Rubell to Whitechapel gallery.
Trained at the Städelschule in Frankfurt he aims at highly conceptual work with reference to art and firm history. in his works he performs a practical analysis of visual language patterns.
after spending more than a decade with computer generated collages, delving into the history of pop images, a new line of work is in the making.
performances resulting in video and photographic still images refer to contemporary art and pop history.

Alona Harpaz was born in 1971 in Israel. Since the late 1990s, Harpaz has been focusing on paintings and has exhibited her works internationally. In the past years, she extended her artistic repertoire by creating installations and video art as well as films.
In 2013 Harpaz co-founded the Circle1 - Platform for Art and Culture in Berlin, where she now contributes as the Art director. The artist-run space is a place for contemporary Israeli and international art.
The opportunity of participating in Sweatshop is a great way to explore the artistic practice of Alona Harpaz whose paintings derive from the memories of color and space and the experience of femininity. Harpaz paints with bold lines and illuminating colors, women, and animal figures juxtaposed against organic images.

Rahel Zaugg (born 1988 in Baden, Switzerland) lives and works in Leipzig.
With SWEAT SHOP there is finally one of the rare opportunities to buy two-dimensional artworks by Rahel Zaugg, an artist otherwise mainly working in three dimensions. Her work intensively deals with the significance of materials and is reduced to the essence. Political and social issues are subtly used. It is important for her to build a bridge between crafts, humor and artistic concept.

The center of my sculptural work is a female archetype, big and powerful, liberated from any discipline, a figurehead for all women with the feeling to not fit in, to be too loud, too fat or too different. A post feministic idea of femininity , that celebrates the female body and female power
This archetype is not isolated, it`s part of an rampant nature, kind of a sculptural manifestation of Henri Bergson`s élan vital.
Henri Bergson was a french- jewish philosopher, born 1859 in Paris, France, known for his arguments that processes of immediate experience and intuition are more significant than abstract rationalism and science for understanding reality.
His concept of élan vital describes the impulses of life in all beings and things, an allness, connecting everything with everything.
I started to draw about this theme to find a balance to my heavy sculptures and I`m especially like the spontaneity and the working speed wich ist possible there in contrast to sculpting.
During my residency at Eastside International in Los Angeles downtown, I made my pop up installation on the facade of the studio building with drawings on brown paper.
The facade is reflecting the downtown skyline and it was a possibility to do a location- dependent work.
The Sweat shop concept is for me a boost of speed and spontaneity and I`m curious what will happen there.
Born in Konstanz, Germany 1975, after an apprenticeship as goldsmith and Studies of Literature, I did my University Diploma and Postgraduate studies at Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden.
Since 2010, living and working in Berlin and Bodman, Germany , I did group shows in Berlin like Looking for Dick at Schau Fenster, Bitch Mater-ial at Kunstquartier Bethanien, Squishy- eels swim on snakey at Juliusstrasse or My myself and I at 68 projects kornfeld gallery, and shows in Stuttgart, Zürich and Cluj.
Some works are in public space like Yolanda at Investitionsbank Berlin, Janus Fairy in Radebeul, Newt and Ostrich in Albstadt .I did my first paper installation at Eastside International Los Angeles and my first soloshow élan vital at Toni-Merz-Museum Sasbach.

All art today is appropriated and in fact it always was. Exploitation of thoughts, feelings, fears desires, political or religious ideas and cultural traditions in all imaginable ways. The notion of spiritual property nowadays seems to be more oevercome than it ever was. Every image is a drafted from a variety of sources impossible to retrace to ist true origin. So every artist is free to steal and recreate things which are around since god knows when and the only question is how smart he or she acts in keeping himself from getting into any kind of legal trouble. Well, I could point fingers on all those famous pop classics based upon a Bo Diddley stomp which in fact was not invented by Bo Diddley, but by some nameless griot summoner in ancient west africa a few thousand years ago, but isn’t Bo just great ? But I would , in all modesty, prefer to bring myself into play for being the right choice for this event. Being an artist driven by the task of irony-critique and a repulsive stance on first-world-problems-artreception ( authorship! authorship ! authorship !) I am delighted to be part of a grotesque and sad bloodsport -event that seems like a Marina-Abramovic- speedway of the romantic and intellectual approach my paintings are soaked with( on paper, not on canvas, it’s cheaper) .
I keep competition in mind when working, but direct contact with your beloved colleagues when it comes to getting in the cold hard cash might bring out the best and worst of human nature and I’m tensed what it will be like for all of us. Given the fact that some artist better known than myself are in, I see this as a decent chance for a fruitful image boost and a chance to surpassing them only through my art, not my name.

The work of Katharina Arndt
Luminous slogans, sparkling rhinestones and shiny car body paint: in Katharina Arndt’s work, the alluring surface is a striking symbol of life in the digital age. In the hyperreal and intangible online world, only visual appearance matters—that of ourselves and the products we should buy. In her works, the artist exaggerates and ironizes the contemporary mass consumerist aesthetic of a decadent, abundant society. She brings things to the shining surface which are to be suppressed by binge buying, i.e. our worries and fears, especially those of our own mortality.

Ismael Duá was born in Berlin Pankow in May 1981. Through his second home Conakry, the studies of international politics in Wales and of fine arts in Munich, he cultivates a global understanding of art and culture. This reflects in works using exclusively the international format A4. All paintings will measure 210 x 297 mm and for the Sweatshop Show 2019, the voids of bigger sizes will simply turn into gold.

Sybille Hotz (*1968, Darmstadt, Germany) lives and works in Berlin
Recurring themes of her work are memory, body and storytelling. Sybille Hotz uses textile material creating drawings, sculptures, installations and rememberance jackets.
For her drawings she uses a subtle minimalistic approach, trying to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite memories in the viewer.
Recently she is working on the project "Die Erinnerungsjacke" (rememberance jacket). She transforms memories into textile images that become a wearable art work as a rememberance jacket.
Within the context of the SWEAT SHOP I will work on paper and canvas. The short working period of 30 minutes requires a spontaneous and playful working method which I do appreciate. I will create textile canvas wraps and collages. My materials will be fabric, wool, fusible bonding tape, filling and sequins. I will work with needle and thread and the iron.
If you like you can bring a drawing or photo as a representation of a memory, which I will use as a reference for the artwork.

Sale will start on April 27, 9:00 a.m.
We offer our artists four different formats to work on:
You will only find those formats in the selection menu that the artist has chosen to work with.
The number of units already sold by the artist and the format you choose determine the price for your purchase.
The format defines the base price, e.g. our Paper DIN A4 (21.0 x 29.7 cm) format has a base price of 70€. If you are the first to book this artist and choose this format the price of your format will remain 70€ as the factor for the first sale is 1.0:
base price x factor = unit price
70€ x 1.0 = 70€
However, with each unit the artist has sold, the price factor increases by 0.15. Let's say the artist has already sold three units and you book the fourth. Your factor will be 1.45:
base price x factor = unit price
70€ x 1.45 = 101,50€
